Shaken and Stirred

A man’s mind once overflowed with noise,
With worries and fears and never any joys.
Thoughts haunted him throughout the night,
So peace felt as distant as stars out of sight.

He tried to control life’s every twist and bend—
Every what-if and maybe that never would end.
If only he could fix it all, he thought he’d be okay,
But no… peace seemed farther and farther away.

He was surprised by the whisper came to his ear,
“Your problem isn’t storms. It’s how you steer.
Your own compass can’t reveal where you should go.
Turn to the only One who has all you need to know.”

His thoughts shifted from the wind and the waves,
Away from personal losses to the One who saves.
There in that moment, so calm and so deep,
A wonderful settling came… a beautiful peace.

But then a tremor came, a rumble, and a shaking.
Surely this earthquake wasn’t of God’s making.
He tried to keep everything from falling apart,
But his lack of control was clear from the start.

So it is, with our hearts, when the future’s unclear,
When shadows grow tall and the path disappears.
We don’t need a map or have the end in sight
If we trust the One who has the future just right.

There is a secret. Although simple, it’s true.
Contentment brings peace like the morning dew.
We don’t say we’ll be happy when life feels right.
God’s grace is sufficient to handle our plight.

Wanting what’s missing will steal what you’ve got.
It’s ignoring what you have for things that are not.
But thanking the Giver for all that he sends
Will fill you with peace that knows no ends.

Sing when it’s stormy and sing when it’s bright.
Sing throughout the day and far into the night.
For praise is a doorway flung open up wide,
Where peace like a river can flow inside.

If you ever wonder, “Is this feeling real?”
Just know it goes deeper than merely a feel.
It grows from a knowing, a deep inner grace—
A life with God’s eternal security in place.

So if you are shaken, reach for the unshaken part.
Turn back to the One who can steady your heart.
Align what you want with what he says is best,
And there you will find your unshakable rest.
